She was a tremendous cook, baker, seamstress and gardener. She was our family foundation and will be truly missed. Many thanks to staff at West Park Manor for the wonderful care they gave to Mary over the past one and one-half years.

God is great. This past year we have seen his goodness in many ways. We have nearly finished our website for English Education material and have seen God bless our tutoring center so that we are at capacity. God has also blessed the expansion of our ministry of training teachers from Taiwan to Inner Mongolia and to India. You can check out what we are doing in our ministry at www.literacygate.com

Vionna (Schade) Hladky
Vionna (Schade) Hladky (1980 BA)
In the early morning hours of July 12, 2010, Vionna Hladky went home to be with her Heavenly Father, after battling cancer at Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre. Her 58 years on this earth served to bring much glory to God and joy to those who knew her. Her family, especially, grieves her passing. There will be no substitute for her steadfast love and devotion. Vionna is survived by her husband, Michael Hladky, her two children, Joel and Anja, parents, Henry and Tillie Schade, siblings Darlene Schade, Garnet Schade and wife Brenda, Brian Schade and wife Debbie, Glenda Berg and husband Mark and her nephews, nieces and great-nephew. She is dearly loved and missed by her husband's family. Vionna was born in 1952 in Beausejour, Manitoba. Her early years were spent enjoying farm life in Greenwald, Manitoba, where she learned the values of patience, perseverance, and plain hard work. It was here where she began to understand the importance of taking care of things living. Seeds of hope and trust in God, even in the midst of disappointment, were planted in these years. Their fruit enabled Vionna to finish life on earth with great dignity and extravagant faith. After her family moved to Winnipeg, her school years were highlighted by a strong intellect and desire for excellence. She eventually pursued and attained a University Degree in Occupational Therapy. Her chosen profession was a platform to care for people in Christ's name. In Vionna, lay a special heart that was touched by God. It was important for her to use the many gifts and talents she was given to bring glory to her Heavenly Father. She desired always to serve God and others. The church ministries she was involved in strengthened the faith and hands of many. Her family can testify to the richness of life she nurtured among them. In faithfulness, she humbly laid foundations of love and made quiet sacrifices regularly so that others could flourish. Vionna and her family very much appreciated the work of her doctors and the compassionate staff of the Health Sciences Centre Urology Unit. We are deeply grateful for the overwhelming love and care of Riverwood Church Community, her church family.

Andrew, Genny and Family
Andrew & Genny (Ebner) Wu (1982 BA, 1986 MA; 1985 Coll)
Many times, I have thought of updating my fellow alumni of the happenings in my life. Each time I have tried to write, an overwhelming sense of inadequacy engulfed me. I realize there is really not much to write about. All I did was try to be faithful in the place God put me, but always, no great accomplishments to talk about. My life does experience the joy of the tender touching of our God. He shapes and molds with His loving hand. May all glory be His for He is faithful and has never abandoned His servant because of my inability. I am in awe of Him. In the past quarter century, it was God's good desire to allow me to serve my own kinsmen in three countries. I pastored in Vancouver, Canada; Vienna, Austria and now in the San Francisco Bay Area, USA. Currently, I am the senior pastor at the San Bruno Chinese Church, where I have served for the past nine years. I also have the honor to serve as the president of the Northern California Chinese Baptist Association and I am also on the leadership team of the Chinese Baptist Fellowship of US & Canada. All these years, Genny stood behind me and is instrumental in bringing up our two lovely children, Charis and Corban, who both will be graduating this year from university and high school respectively. The one thing I am truly proud of is that they love God deeply and are committed to foreign missions.

Tom & Linda Rathjen (1986 MA)
After graduation I went from working construction in Steinbach, to being on staff at Full Gospel Chapel in Steinbach as Pastor of Adult Ministries and Music. By Spring of 1990 we knew God was leading us back to B.C. and in August we headed West, believing that there was a teaching position somewhere in a B.C. Bible School for me. I picked up a TESL Certificate in the Summer of 1992 and landed a full-time ESL teaching position at Trinity Western University. For 4 years I reluctantly accepted promotions and moved into the Assistant Director position. God finally opened my eyes to the fact that this really was His first choice for me, and so I jumped in full steam, only to find myself appointed Director, 4 months later, in January of 1996. I remained in that role for 8 years, having many wonderful opportunities to travel around the world marketing for international students from China, Russia, Indonesia, Taiwan and Germany to come to our program at TWU. Those were rich years working in the Christian educational environment. In 1991, my wife and our 3 children accepted a volunteer opportunity to bring music in some local prisons. This continued once a month throughout all those 14 years that I was directing our ESLI program. I was beginning to feel restless with my management position and finding ever greater fulfillment working in the various prison ministries opening up to us. Finally, not too long before my 50th birthday, I applied for a Chaplaincy opening at Kent Institution (Federal Maximum Security!!!) ! My application was accepted 3 weeks later and by October, 2005, I was walking the clanging, echoing halls of a Maximum Security Prison, holding Chapel services each Sunday, counselling inmates, encouraging CSC staff and recruiting prison volunteers from our Churches. I had no fear as I entered through the high brick walls and razor wire coils each day. These past 4.5 years have absolutely been the greatest, most fulfilling years of ministry in my life. In March, 2008, I transferred closer to home to work at both a Minimum and a Medium Security Prison in Mission. My "perish" is almost 400 men, who have committed every crime one can imagine. I have had countless opportunities to share the truths and lessons I learned in Chuck Nichols' and Steve Masterson's classes. After all, it was those Seminary classes that changed the direction of my life and I vowed, whenever God gave me the chance, I would teach and preach and counsel those life's lessons to others. My kids are grown now and on their own, although once in a while one or two of them come with my wife and I to a special prison Chapel function.

The Nineties
Heidi Graham de Olivares (1999 College)
My husband and I are missionaries in Guatemala. I do spend some months in Canada each year but we are full time missionaries in Central America. We work with a program called Seeds International. It is a great ministry where we work in public schools. We work with 5th grade students. It is a 14 lesson program where the students learn about God, how sin seperates them from God and on lesson 5 they hear how they can give their hearts to Jesus. the next lessons are discipleship lessons and the students learn about love, self control etc. We have 127 schools throughout Guatemala and this year we started working in Costa Rica as well. We are always looking for teams/students to come down and help. We have teams that come down for short term missions and visit our schools doing evangelistic programs or we work with individuals who help our students in practical ways (with dental care, health, giving vitamins, food, clothes etc). The majority of our schools are in rural mountain areas that are extremely poor. Check out the website: www.seeds.org

Christoph & Alexandra Caspari
Christoph Caspari (1999 College)
I've been married to Alexandra since June 7th 2008. Avinash Vishnumoorthi was my best men and his wife Deborah (Goerz) attended, too.
Alexandra had worked in a bank in Frankfurt before she moved to the Rhine valley of Koblenz. After several office jobs she now trains to become a pharmacy technical assistant.
We got engaged about three years ago and decided to stay in the region. We like to travel, but right now Alexandra's school takes up a lot of time, money and effort (one more year to go). In August 2010 I will start at my new school in Lahnstein, just a five minute walk away from our home. I will teach English, German and Religious Education (grades 5 - 10) besides intensifying my skills as a careers teacher. So far our family consist of two human beings (Alexandra and myself), seven rabbits (5 female and two ex-male) and a hamster. We get a lot of action at home, but I guess it's good training for being a good mom and dad in the future, eh ;-) We're also engaged in my home parish of St. Barbara and our biggest project so far is the establishment of a private christian school in the region. More and more parents are getting dissatisfied and frustrated with our public school system and the general loss of virtues in our society. We need lots of help to get this project started and all good ideas, thoughts, tips and and your prayers are very much welcome.

Following graduation from Providence, I lived in Winnipeg and worked at various jobs, including teaching music. In 2006, after teaching English in South Korea for three months, I moved back to my home town of Swan River, Manitoba, to care for my grandfather. One year later, I started teaching music lessons to 30 students. The Lord brought me back to Providence in the summer of 2008 to complete my TESOL certificate. Since then, I’ve worked with an online program that works to develop the English skills of internationally educated nurses (I.E.N) within Manitoba. I continue to teach piano lessons to 30 students as well as help lead worship in my local church. Finally, soon after I moved back to Swan, I met my fiancé, Medhat Geloa. We plan to marry this fall.

I am currently living in Morden, Manitoba and working in Winkler as an accountant for a company that exports farm machinery & agricultural parts to various countries around the world (mostly the former CIS). Since my years at Providence, I have also been pursuing my CGA designation, although I'm currently taking a reprieve from my studies. I'm also currently volunteering with Morden YFC, as well as being on the board with the local Big Brothers Big Sisters Chapter. God has given me many opportunities to serve, and I'm continously amazed by the people in this area and their hearts for outreach locally and overseas. This last spring I had the opportunity to go on a short-term mission trip, something I've wanted to do for a long time. I was part of a YFC Team that went to serve at a YFC run school in the community of Los Alcarrisoz, a very poor suburb outside the capital of Santo Domingo. It was an experience that has changed me, and Lord willing, I hope to go back next year.

Andy & Colleen and Family
Andy & Colleen Martin (2000 BA, 2001 MA & 2002 Seminary)
Our family has great memories of living at Providence - the kids fondly remember the stray animals, the frog-filled puddles, the mosquitoes and friendly students who bought their various creations. In September Brendon is planning to attend Prov, Janna will be starting grade 12 and Sonya is going into grade 8. Colleen has been working for four plus years at Parkwood Mennonite Home (retirement, long-term care) as a receptionist/office administrator and she has completed her first course at the University of Waterloo toward a diploma in social work. We lived in Niverville till 2005 when we moved back "home" to Elmira, Ontario where I (Andy) completed an MTS degree in theology at Conrad Grebel University College/University of Waterloo. In 2007 I entered the doctoral program at Toronto School of Theology - University of Toronto in Pastoral Theology - Christian spirituality. My specialization is Anabaptist-Mennonite spirituality and the theme of humility in the monastic tradition. I have also been counselling since 2007 at Woolwich Counselling Centre, a local nonprofit organization where I currently see six clients a week. Manitoba and Providence and the friendships we encoutered there occupy a special place in our hearts.

Sheldon and Lavonne Penner
Sheldon & Lavonne(Fehr) Penner (2005 BA; 2001 College)
This coming August will mark the five year anniversary as being youth pastor in the Morden EMMC Church. Being a youth pastor was something that I always thought would be the coolest job in the world but I seriously doubted whether God could actually use me in that way. The past five years have definitely been a journey, sometimes up, sometimes down, and to the left and the right. Through it all the major thing that I see as I look back is how God took my efforts and turned it into something that he can use. Walking with God not only is never boring, he has also blessed me in big ways. Shortly after graduating from Providence in 2005 God blessed me with an incredible life partner. Lavonne teaches grade four here in Morden and also manages to be very involved with ministry at the church.
Blessings,
