Singing and Memories with and for Dr. Schellenberg

August 6, 2012

On August 6, 2012, over 200 alumni, faculty, friends and family of Dr. Henry Schellenberg’s met in the Providence University College Chapel to sing and to celebrate him and the influence that he has had on all our lives, and to infuse him with strength and courage as he once again battles cancer.

The choral section was set up with the men and women facing each other across the aisle, while spectators sat in a few rows in the back, as well as in the balcony.

The evening started off with “Praise to the Lord, The Almighty”, with Robert Neufeld at the organ. We quickly realized that this was not just another ordinary concert- the passion, joy and love of music flowed through the room, and it seemed as if the rafters were lifting to accommodate the full, vigorous sound coming from over 200 voices.

Dr. Schellenberg conducted almost all of the songs that evening. We sang old favorites from over the years- some were rustier than we remembered (but still so much fun to sing!), but most of the songs fell together beautifully- the harmonies were magical. Soloists from over the years were featured in a few songs, and Dr. Schellenberg himself sang the solo in “The Beatitudes” as one of his former students conducted the choir.

The feeling of awe that descended on the room was amazing- there was no doubt we were a part of something very special that evening.

Alumni and students shared stories, laughs, tears, and there was even a limerick written for Dr. Schellenberg as a thank you for all the ones he’s written for us over the years.

The evening ended with a rousing version of “Great is Thy Faithfulness”, and we left with our hearts filled to overflowing.

Dr. Schellenberg has truly built a tremendous legacy over the years- he holds a special place in all our hearts, and our thoughts and prayers are with him as he goes through this season of life.
