Calgary Alumni Reception
May 10, 2013
An Alumni reception was held in Calgary on May 10th, 2013. Approximately 50 Alumni of both University College and Seminary gathered for an evening of renewing friendships of classmates and Faculty, as well as several current Counselling Graduates that graduated the following day. Dr. Stan Hamm gave a warm welcome, followed by Dr. David Johnson sharing some updates and current news about Providence. Dr. Rod Buxton closed the formal part of the evening with prayer. Thank you to everyone that attended! We appreciate our Alumni and it was so good to see everyone again!
Friends of Providence Picnic in the Park
June 17, 2013
In June we held our first Picnic in the Park. The event was mainly geared at alumni and allowed them a chance to visit with old friends while enjoying the beautiful summer weather. About 20 alumni and donors came out to Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg to enjoy a wonderful lunch, catered by our Sodexo staff. President David Johnson gave an address about the current state of Providence, and the afternoon closed by visiting and looking over old yearbooks.
Alumni Potluck Get-Together in Winnipeg
August 23, 2012
Our fourth annual Potluck Get-Together was held in the lovely and spacious home of Darryl and Beatrice Pauls in Winnipeg on September 14, 2012. We enjoyed a delicious meal while telling stories and remembering funny experiences at Providence, along with the many changes that have happened over the years. We talked about upcoming events to look forward to this fall.
August 6, 2012
On August 6, 2012, over 200 alumni, faculty, friends and family of Dr. Henry Schellenberg’s met in the Providence University College Chapel to sing and to celebrate him and the influence that he has had on all our lives, and to infuse him with strength and courage as he once again battles cancer.
The choral section was set up with the men and women facing each other across the aisle, while spectators sat in a few rows in the back, as well as in the balcony.
The evening started off with “Praise to the Lord, The Almighty”, with Robert Neufeld at the organ. We quickly realized that this was not just another ordinary concert- the passion, joy and love of music flowed through the room, and it seemed as if the rafters were lifting to accommodate the full, vigorous sound coming from over 200 voices.
Dr. Schellenberg conducted almost all of the songs that evening. We sang old favorites from over the years- some were rustier than we remembered (but still so much fun to sing!), but most of the songs fell together beautifully- the harmonies were magical. Soloists from over the years were featured in a few songs, and Dr. Schellenberg himself sang the solo in “The Beatitudes” as one of his former students conducted the choir.
The feeling of awe that descended on the room was amazing- there was no doubt we were a part of something very special that evening.
Alumni and students shared stories, laughs, tears, and there was even a limerick written for Dr. Schellenberg as a thank you for all the ones he’s written for us over the years.
The evening ended with a rousing version of “Great is Thy Faithfulness”, and we left with our hearts filled to overflowing.
Dr. Schellenberg has truly built a tremendous legacy over the years- he holds a special place in all our hearts, and our thoughts and prayers are with him as he goes through this season of life.

Our third Alumni Potluck Get-Together was held in the beautiful home of Lloyd and Kathy Thiessen in Winkler on August 23, 2012. We appreciate the generosity of Lloyd and Kathy for hosting this fun event. It was a relaxing and enjoyable evening of reminiscing, story telling and sharing family pictures. Dr. David Johnson gave a short devotional and we also talked about upcoming events and changes happening at Providence.

Our second Alumni Potluck Get-Together was held at the home of Wayne and Connie LeMay in Grunthal on July 5, 2012. We had a lovely evening in their spacious home and were all able to sit at their long dining room table. After Gus Konkel gave a blessing for the meal, we enjoyed a delicious variety of food that was brought by all. Gus even signed some WBC souvenir plates for anyone who wanted one. The evening went by quickly with lots of story telling and laughter.
The Diploma in Biblical Counselling was offered at Fredericton, New Brunswick in three modules from January 2011 through June 2012. During that time the students also completed three video courses. Most of the eleven graduates are involved in the First Nations Outreach in Saint Mary’s First Nation, in an Overcomers recovery group, and other caregiving ministries. The local organizers, Martin and Susan Bear, have experienced God’s healing in their marriage, and they wanted to be better equipped to share a message of healing and hope in their community. They and the others students are grateful to have had the opportunity to attend the program in their own community.
