Southern Manitoba has a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. In spite of the cold winter weather, southern Manitoba skies are among the clearest in Canada with lots of sunny weather all year round.

The commencement of the Providence’s Fall term at the beginning of September coincides with the start of the autumn season. Cooler temperatures arrive with daily average highs of 19C (68F) displacing the hot summer weather. Trees start changing into their fall colours and the farmers are harvesting their crops in the adjacent fields. By mid-November with an average high of 0C (32F) there is snow in the forecast. This can be an enjoyable experience for many of our international students who have never seen or felt real snow. By Christmas the Fall term has concluded and the campus is covered in a white snowy blanket. The average high temperature at this time is –10C (14F).

Make sure you stay for the Winter Term because most of the snow comes in January. The daily average high may be –13C (8F) but daily highs of –25 to –30C (-13 to –22F) are common. Morning hoar frost (or as Koreans call snow flowers) sparkling in the rising morning sun can bring a sense of wonderment. Just as common the snow drifting in a blowing winter storm can bring a sense of adventure. However, the days are getting longer and there’s always outdoor skating on the longest outdoor rink in the world in Winnipeg. By the time the term is over in April the snow has melted, sun is intermixed with spring showers, and the Canada geese are migrating overhead to their summer nesting grounds. The daily average high is about 10C (50F) but lots of students are in T-shirts and shorts because it feels like summer after the cold winter.
