The Providence Fund

At Providence, tuition dollars do not cover the full cost of the education program. It actually costs $500,000 more (approximately $1,000 more per student) than we charge in tuition. We want to ensure that a quality Christian education is made affordable to as many people as possible. Donations to Providence Fund go to areas where it is most needed and helps to keep costs down for deserving students.

Student Assistance- Scholarships and Bursaries

Scholarships

Providence College seeks to reward excellence. One of the ways donors can be involved with Providence in rewarding excellence is through the scholarship program. Scholarships are financial assistance offered to students on the basis of academic achievement, artistic performance or community involvement.

Give to an existing scholarship

Providence already has many scholarships in place for outstanding students in areas such as academics and christian leadership, among many others. Donors can contribute to one of these scholarship to ensure that high-achieving students receive the recognition and assistance they deserve.

Create a new scholarship

If you have a passion for a specific field of study, whether that be youth ministry or media work, you can create a scholarship to reward students who meet qualifications you set. Scholarships are often given in memory of someone, to honour someone, or in the donor's own name. For example: a group of family members would like to create a scholarship to honour their parents who are musicians, and the scholarship is to be awarded to a student in the B.A. program with a Music major. It could be named the “John and Jane Doe Music Scholarship.”

For more information about contributing to or creating a scholarship, please contact Gary Schellenberg, by e-mail or by phone at 1-800-668-7768 ext. 222

Bursaries

There are two types of Providence Bursaries to which donors can contribute to:

Need-Based Bursary

Donors can contribute to an exisiting or create a new Need-Based bursary. These bursaries are based solely on financial need beyond what student loans can offer. The bursaries can be tailored to a specific group of students, such as Performing Arts.

Recruitment Bursary

This bursary is for financial assistance offered to students for the purpose of encouraging them to study at Providence. These bursaries can also be tailored to a specific group of students. Both Need-Based and Recruitment Bursaries can be created and named in honour of someone.

For more information about contributing to or creating a scholarship, please contact Gary Schellenberg, by e-mail or by phone at 1-800-668-7768 ext. 222

Endowment Chairs

One of the things that Providence prides itself on is the close relationship between faculty and students. It is a common sight to see professors dinning with their students, or challenging each other to game of foosball in the Student Life Centre. With these relationships in mind, Providence has created the Endowed Chairs program.

An endowed chair is a full-time teaching faculty position that identifies a particular area of study and is backed by adequate financial resources to ensure its continuance indefinitely. Any faculty position can be endowed, and the area of study can be matched to the donor's passions. An endowment ensures that a faculty position stays funded, protected, and continues to grow.

For more information regarding endowing chairs, contact the Development Department at 1-800-668-7768 ext 236 or send an e-mail to the Development staff.

Legacy Giving

For many people, ensuring that the work of Providence and its impact on lives continues is a high priority. Ensuring that Providence's future is secure is a commitment that many donors have made. With this in mind, Providence has created the opportunity for supporters to become Legacy donors.

Legacy gifts include Gifts in Kind, Wills and Bequests, Charitable Trusts, Gifts of Shares, Gifts of Life Insurance and Pension Assets, Gifts of RRSPs, RRIFs, and Pension, and Matching Gifts. Our number one goal is to ensure that your gifts are properly managed and applied to your wishes. It is our promise that the spirit and intent of your gift will help students for generations to come.

Wills and Bequests
Gifts by Will to Providence enable individuals to make significant gifts that they may not have been able to make during their lifetimes. Bequests to Providence, whether unrestricted or designated, are eligible for tax receipts.

For more information regarding gifts through Wills and Bequests, contact the Development Department at 1-800-668-7768 ext 236 or send an e-mail to the Development staff.

Charitable Gift Annuities
A Charitable Gift Annuity is both a donation and an investment in Providence and will provide you with a fixed income for life. The Providence Charitable Gift Annuity is a financial agreement in which you make a donation of $10,000 or more to Providence College. In return, you will receive a contractual promise from Providence College and Seminary who will secure a commercial annuity from one of Canada’s leading life insurance companies. This will pay you and provide you with a guaranteed fixed income for life without worrying about interest rate changes.

For more information on Charitable Gift Annuities, contact the Development Department at 1-800-668-778 ext 236 or send an e-mail to the Development staff.

Charitable Remainder Trusts
If you have assets that you would consider gifting to Providence in your Will but would like to receive the tax benefits today, or need the gift to fall outside of your estate, a charitable trust arrangement may be the answer.

For more information regarding gifts through Charitable Trusts, contact the Development Department at 1-800-668-7768 ext 236 or send an e-mail to the Development staff.

Gifts of Shares

Gifts of securities or shares are ideal donations for individuals who have much of their finances tied up in investments. Providence is happy to accept donations of securities or shares, and the tax benefits for the donor can be quite high. By donating securities that have increased in value since their purchase, the donor reduces the income tax that would be paid for cashing in the security and receives a receipt for the full market value of the security.

For more information about giving shares or securities, or to discuss a project or program you are interested in, please contactc the Development Department at 1-800-668-7768 ext 236 or send an e-mail to the Development staff.

Gifts of Life Insurance and Pension Assets
Life insurance can be a convenient and cost-effective means of making a substantial gift for the future of the school. By means of a small annual contribution, a donor is able to make a substantial gift without depriving the family or depleting the estate. In such a policy, Providence is designated as the owner and beneficiary. Premium contributions are made to the school as charitable gifts. Income tax receipts are issued. Providence remits the payments to the insurance company. In time, the small annual premium contributions create a larger gift than would otherwise be impossible.

For more information of Gifts of Life Insurance and Pension Assets, contact the Development Department at 1-800-668-7768 ext 236 or send an e-mail to the Development staff.
