Providence University College Public Lecture Series
This series of seven free public lectures are designed to offer a free educational experience for the general public by Providence University College faculty.
The sixth lecture in the series, titled "The Effects of Media Violence on Children and Youth: Does Reel Violence Cause Real Violence?" will be given by Valerie Hiebert, Ph.D. (cand.), Assistant Professor of Sociology.
There is considerable public policy debate regarding the effects of media violence on children/youth, along with concerns voiced by educators and parents. Both the disciplines of Psychology and Sociology have given significant research attention to this issue over the past two decades. This lecture will overview the current theory and research of both film violence and video game violence effects, paying particular attention to the cognitive, emotional, and social impacts on children/youth.
