What did the Russian say to the Taiwanese at the trade conference? Probably something in English. It does not take a scholar to observe that English has become the lingua franca in many parts of the globe: the language of science, diplomacy, international business and culture. Because of its geo-political history, English currently finds itself in a unique position. Anthropologist Benedict Anderson has suggested that English is a kind of “global-hegemonic post-clerical Latin”. Worldwide, the great majority of English speakers grew up speaking another language as their first. What implications does the state of this ‘worldwide dialect of the third millennium’ have for learners of English?
