Public Lecture - Manufacturing Discontent: A Sociological Analysis of Advertising
“Manufacturing Discontent: A Sociological Analysis of Advertising”
Part of the Providence University College Public Lecture Series 2014, a community service for the general public. Admission is free – no registration is required.
What prompts Americans to swing from expressing contentment and gratitude on their Thanksgiving Day, to enacting discontentment and greed on Black Friday the very next day? What prompts Canadians to place more value on the social meanings of what they buy than on the inherent qualities of what they buy? Describing the types, phases, strategies, and techniques of advertising reveals how it succeeds as persuasive communication. Examining the trends and challenges of advertising in postmodern popular culture explains its current character and status. Most importantly, understanding the contributions of advertising to consumer culture helps us assess its consequences for society.
