Freemen Strikers Stymie Steinbach
Wiens, Giesbrecht, Dyck combine for 6 goals as Freemen win 10-0
The Providence Soccer team entered Thursday evening’s cold and wet match-up against Steinbach Bible College hoping to see how their depth players could perform with big minutes. After finding the back of the net ten times, Coach Ward and his Freemen left the game optimistic about the chemistry seen on the field regardless of the line-up.
The match started out with Providence controlling the play but not able to settle down and finish their opportunities. However, Mario Giesbrecht was able to put away a goal early in the first half and jumpstarted a Freemen offence into action. By the second half Providence had only three regular starters left on the field, but it didn’t stop the offence from flowing as they finished the game with ten goals while the defense held Steinbach scoreless.
The game was also host to multiple highlight goals from the Freemen squad. Junior Adam Mywaart put on a hard volley from a tight angle on the left side to score his second of the game. Freshman Brendan Wiens also showed a nice finishing touch on his second of four goals as he lobbed home a bouncing ball over a charging Steinbach keeper.
Coach Ward left the game happy with his team’s performance, and in particular was pleased with the effort that his depth players gave on the pitch.
“We came out and did what we needed to do,” Coach Ward said. “I was happy that we didn’t concede any goals. It was also good to see our depth at use, and to see that the bench players we have can come on and play good, attractive soccer.”
