Guenther Sets Pace
Freshman setter Devon Guenther totals 49 assists as Lady Freemen win two on weekend
The Lady Freemen volleyball squad knew that they would have to continue their strong play as of late as they entered a home-and-home series against Red River College this weekend. After a decisive victory Friday night on the road and an even more convincing win on Saturday at home, they showed continued improvement as they approach their NCCAA regional tournament.
The Lady Freemen and RRC Rebels started the weekend in Winnipeg with the Rebels hosting the first match-up. However, for the Lady Freemen it was more like a home game as the Rebels’ stands were packed full of Freemen supporters that deafened any cheers heard from the home crowd. The first set saw Providence being able to find the holes in a determined Rebels’ defense as they took it 25-13. The second set saw the ladies up their game even more as Providence played an attractive pass and kill game to win the set 25-18. In the final set the Lady Freemen appeared to lose their concentration as the Rebels picked up their intensity and it led to a back and forth contest between the two sides. However, it was Providence who was able to put the finishing touches on the match as they took the set 25-22.
On Saturday the teams met on Providence turf to see if the Rebels could avenge their Friday night defeat. But it was the Lady Freemen who once again played the stronger games as they took the first two sets 25-15 and 26-24. However, after a close second set and the remembrance of the final set the night before, Coach Heidebrecht took the post-set break to motivate her team to finish strong. Her ladies responded by coming out and dominating the final set 25-9 to finish the match.
Seeing strong play from her girls over the weekend left Lady Freemen Head Coach Becky Heidebrecht feeling like her team is continuing to improve as they head into the final stretch of the season.
“The girls played two solid games this weekend against Red River,” Coach Heidebrecht said. “We faced our biggest challenge in the second set on Saturday but were still able to pull out a tight win and respond by bouncing back with a decisive third set.”
“It was good to see the girls continue to gel well together and play hard.”
The team was led statistically by Devon Guenther as she earned 49 assists on the weekend. Guenther was also one of three players to record 3 service aces on the weekend, joining Mandy Reimer and Vicky Ryshytylo in accomplishing the feat.
