Bill Rennie brought kindness and prayerful concern to Providence Board post
Bill Rennie was a long-time friend of Providence.
“He was a gentleman of the ‘old school’, always enjoyable to be around,” says Providence President David Johnson, adding that the former Board member of 11 years maintained a keen interest in the life of the school.
Rennie, 92, passed away on September 21, 2015, leaving Connie—his wife of 71 years—three children (he was predeceased by daughter Nancy) and their families. (Connie, herself, served 12 years on the Providence board.)
Born in Winnipeg, he graduated as a navigator in 1944 after joining the Royal Canadian Air Force and, following World War II, embarked on an accounting career that saw him become Senior Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers.
“My son had the privilege of articling at PricewaterhouseCoopers and Bill would always ask me how he was doing,” says Gary Schellenberg, Director of Institutional Services at Providence. “I really appreciated this about Bill.”
Schellenberg first met Rennie in 1975 when the latter was auditor of Winnipeg Bible College.
“Bill was always an encouragement to me and at Board meetings always had kind words about the job I was doing as Business Manager,” he says. “He would always be ready to give advice and answer questions on accounting matters.”
Rennie also provided support and counsel to the Canadian Sunday School Mission, MacKinnon Foundation, and Union Gospel Mission. No doubt he is remembered as fondly at each as at Providence.
“We will miss his kindness and prayerful concern for our mission and our students,” says Johnson.
Adds Schellenberg: “Bill demonstrated his faith in real and tangible ways and is the model of a Christian I would attempt to emulate.”
