Brothers Darken Steinbach's Title Hopes
Andry and Mario Giesbrecht combine for 5 goals and 2 assists in Freemen victory
After two dominant regular season victories against Steinbach Bible College, the Providence Freemen entered Saturday’s MCAC Championship semi-final match-up as the heavy favourites. After a dominating performance, and a 12-1 victory, the Freemen proved they deserved a shot at the MCAC title.
Saturday’s semi-final saw the Freemen control the play from start to finish against a tenacious SBC team that fought hard throughout, and even put away a goal late in the second half. However, it was Providence’s game as they scored early and often and finished with seven different players being able to find the back of the net. The game also saw all healthy Freemen players receive playing time as Coach Ward rewarded his dedicated bench players with well-deserved playing time.
At the MCAC press conference following the game, Junior midfielder Giancarlo Calla challenged his team to come out with an even stronger performance in the finals, and reminded the league of Providence strives for excellence in their play.
“It was good that we won, but I think we can do better,” Calla said. “Some play was a little bit sloppy, and we had a few mental mistakes out there. We need to come in more prepared for tomorrow’s game and play to our potential.”
