Lady Freemen Soccer Fall In Region Semi-Finals
Providence outplays but can’t finish as they fall to Faith 2-0
The Providence Lady Freemen soccer squad knew that if they could finish their opportunities in the regional tournament they would be able to fight for the title. However, the Lady Freemen once again found themselves in a game where they dominated the play but remained unable to finish their opportunities and it led them to a 2-0 semi-final loss at the hands of the Faith Baptist Bible College Eagles.
The Lady Freemen came out strong and created multiple opportunities for themselves as soon as the opening whistle was heard. However, despite multiple breakaways and opportunities in the penalty area, the Lady Freemen remained unable to score. At the other end the Providence defense was a wall as they allowed only two scoring opportunities in the half, both of which were stopped on superb saves from freshman keeper Alyssa Coutts.
The second half began with Providence continuing their dominance. However, Faith slowly started to become more competitive, and eventually put one in the back of the net on a quick counterattack to take a 1-0 lead. Shortly after that, Faith was awarded a penalty kick that they buried to go up by two. Providence then controlled the play and put tremendous amount of offensive pressure on Faith, but they remained unable to finish their opportunities and fell to Faith 2-0.
Four Providence players were named to the All-Region team; sophomore Meghan Edwards, sophomore Amanda Franz, freshman Melanie Warkentine, and freshman Gena Giesbrecht.
The loss signaled the end to the Lady Freemen soccer season, but left them with high hopes for next season. For Providence, it was a season plagued with injuries and unfortunate occurrences, but also a season that saw a lot of improvement from a young squad. The team often dominated possession and play but couldn’t find the finishing touch, something that can hopefully be solved through off-season training, recruiting, and through the healthy return of forward Ruth Maddever.
