Lady Freeman Fall in Season Opener
Blazers burn Freemen 64-36 in women’s basketball action
11/22 – The Lady Freemen entered their season opening game Saturday evening hoping to compete against a Canadian Mennonite University Blazers squad that has been competing since October 8th. However, Providence’s inexperience showed through as they fell to their counterparts 64-36 in a lopsided contest.
CMU started the game strong and continued their dominance throughout the half as Providence seemed unable to put together a string of plays to get themselves back in the game. CMU’s play earned them a heavy 34-11 lead at the half.
The half seemed to calm the nerves of a young Lady Freemen squad as they started the third quarter looking like a whole new squad. Led by the aggressive play of freshman Sonia Radi (14 pts, 6 rbs, 3 assts, 3 stls), Providence played a half that saw them equal their opponents scoring in the quarter, but remain behind 47-24. However, the Blazers’ squad squandered any hopes of a comeback and finished the game with a convincing 64-36 victory
First-year head coach Patti Parker left the game happy with her team’s ability to fight back after suffering such a one-sided opening half.
“Although it was a tough loss to start the season with and we've got a lot of improvements to make, there were certainly some positive aspects to take away from the game,” Coach Parker said. “We went into the game knowing that our lack of experience might lead to some mistakes, but it is how we responded to those mistakes that matters most. The team took it as a learning experience and stuck together with a very positive attitude throughout the game.”
