Rebels Defeat Freemen
Red River College takes match-up against Providence in three sets
11/27 – The Providence Freemen hosted the Red River College Rebels Friday night in a match-up that featured two undefeated teams. However, the game didn’t live up to its expectations as the Rebels handed the Freemen their first loss by sweeping them in three straight sets.
Red River came out focused and won the opening set 25-17 as they took advantage of uncharacteristic play from the usually consistent Providence team. However, Providence seemed to pick up its play as they entered the second set, and jumped out to a 14-9 lead. But the Freemen offense slowed once again, and the Rebels were able to steal the set 25-21. Providence coach Jason Peters then inserted Jesse Lofthouse and BJ Harder into the line-up for the third set hoping to see some change in his team’s play. The insertion seemed to work as the two brought energetic presences to the court and Providence seemed to be stepping up their play. However, the Rebels were once again up to the task as they pulled away mid-set and took the match with a 25-17 set win.
After playing great volleyball in its previous two games, the Freemen fell victim to uncharacteristic plays and gave a skilled Rebels squad the chances needed to take a victory on the road. However, Coach Peters remains confident that, as the season picks up, his squad will be able to iron out the inconsistencies and gel as a team.
“We played well for small stretches during the match, but not enough to win against a top tier opponent,” Coach Peters said. “We are, however, confident that after some more time in practice (we have only had 2 practices with our full roster) that we will be very competitive with Red River. We passed the ball well enough to win, but faltered with our offensive and our fundamentals of positioning late each set and that caused us to fall behind.”
