We Got Da Funk
Chris & Jesse Funk combine for 27 points in Freemen win
Chris Funk poured in 14 points, while brother Jesse added 13 to lead the Freemen to a 67-40 victory over College Universitaire de Saint-Boniface Saturday evening.
However it wasn’t the offense that earned Providence a victory in their last game before the break. Freemen coach Juan Larios has been stressing the importance of defensive tenacity to his team all season long, and Saturday night his team responded in a big way as Providence came out and forced CUSB into an amazing 25 first half turnovers en route to their most impressive defensive half thus far in the season.
“Team defense was exceptional,” Freemen coach Juan Larios commented after the game. “It was the key to our success.”
The Freemen then used their defensive prowess to jumpstart their counterattack against a very athletic CUSB squad. Joel Coursey also established himself as a dominant force down low, and in the end the Freemen earned their third consecutive victory against CUSB with a 67-40 score.
Coach Larios left the game impressed with his team’s defensive effort and with the improvement he has already seen from his squad thus far in the season. He also sees the break as an opportunity for his players to work on their shooting consistency heading into the second half of the season.
“We are really improving in all aspects,” Coach Larios said. “Team defense and our ability to give teams different defensive sets is a key to our success and for the most part the team is seeing the advantage of this strategy. Our main concern over the break is focusing on offensive strategy.”
