Providence President reappointed on five-year term
Dr. David Johnson says his tenure as President of Providence University College and Theological Seminary, which began in 2013, has been one of the “great privileges” of his life.
At a March meeting of the institution’s Board of Governors, Dr. Johnson was presented a new, five-year mandate that will keep him at the Providence helm through 2021.
“Our Board of Governors was happy to renew Dr. Johnson’s contract as President, and we look forward to his leadership and input over the next five years,” says Board Chair Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht. “Dr. Johnson has dedicated himself to tirelessly pursuing the success of Providence.”
Dr. Johnson says his main tasks going forward include bolstering the school’s academic offerings and expanding its constituency. He points to Business, Counselling, and TESOL as existing, “signature” programs and believes Providence, with increased science offerings, enhanced accessibility through distance education in the Seminary, and a growing Mile Two Discipleship School, is setting itself up well for the future.
“Since I began teaching at Providence in 1990, I don’t think we have ever experienced so much change all in the same year,” he says. “We are beginning to take some rapid steps to serve students.”
Dr. Giesbrecht believes the next five years of Dr. Johnson’s tenure will see continued growth, not only in the student body but also in the institution’s reputation in local, national, and international communities.
“I believe that years from now we will look back on Dr. Johnson’s vision and agree it was a major turning point in our history,” he says.
“I have met amazing people and have an amazing Cabinet,” says Dr. Johnson, adding that it’s the Providence students, who continue to grow in knowledge and character for leadership and service, who amaze him the most.
“As people pray and God wills, we want to position Providence to make the climb to become one of the leading, Christian universities in Canada,” he says. “We will do all of this to the glory of our great Creator and Saviour.”
