Blazers top Freemen
CMU beats Prov 67-42 in women’s basketball action
The Lady Freemen travelled to Canadian Mennonite University Friday night with hopes of bringing home their first MCAC win of the season. However, the Blazers proved too much for Providence, as they pulled out a 67-42 win.
Both sides came out composed and prepared early on, as the squads battled it out for the early momentum. For every skillfully maneuvered basket the Blazers would earn, the Lady Freemen would counter with a patient swing and shoot. CMU then started to pull away late in the quarter, but Lady Freemen senior Jill Reimer (19 pts, 15 rebs, 4 stls, 4 blks, 3 assts) led a late Providence charge to come back within 9, with the Blazers holding a 30-21 advantage heading into the break.
The third quarter then belonged to a tenacious Blazers squad, as they took advantage of any openings presented by the Lady Freemen, and outscored Providence by 8 in the quarter to put the game out of reach. Providence’s defensive struggles then continued in the fourth, and the Blazers ended it with a decisive 67-42 score.
“I think the girls are definitely becoming more patient with the ball and we were able to break CMU's full-court press,” coach Parker said. “We played controlled and smart in the first half but gave up easy baskets in the second half.”
