Freemen Split in Weekend Hoops Action
Providence falls to CMU, bounces back with win over St. Boniface
The Freemen basketball squad entered Friday night’s action hoping to put an end to the CMU Blazers’ 6-0 start to the season, however the Blazers had other plans as they snuck out a 64-59 victory. But Providence then entered Saturday’s match-up against the St. Boniface Voyageurs with something to prove, and pulled out a decisive 78-63 win to sweep the season series between the two squads.
Providence entered Friday night’s match-up against CMU licking their chops as they faced an injury-depleted Blazers roster that was only able to dress six players. But someone forgot to tell CMU about the disadvantage they were at, as they ran rampant over the Freemen early on, leading to a 37-23 Blazers lead at the half. However, the lack of subs began to show for the Blazers in the second half, and sophomore post Joel Coursey (22 pts) took advantage as he led an impressive second-half charge from a re-awakened Freemen side. The Freemen then fought all the way back to within three points, but the Blazers were able to hold on for a 64-59 win.
The Freemen then entered Saturday’s game against St. Boniface hoping to earn their fifth consecutive win over the Voyageurs this season. Providence came out with intensity, and took control of the game early on in a game where the outcome was never truly in question. The Freemen continued their strong play, and finished off the weekend with a 78-63 victory to earn the season sweep over the St. Boniface Voyageurs.
Notes: The Freemen return to action this weekend as they host Oak Hills Friday evening and Red River College Saturday afternoon.
