Rams knock Lady Freemen out of NCCAA Regional Tourney

The women’s basketball squad travelled to Ankeny, Iowa this past weekend hoping to play the spoiler in their NCCAA Division II Regional Tournament. Ranked #4 in the region the squad had the daunting challenge of facing the #1 ranked North Central University Rams in their opening match-up. However, pulling off the upset against a Rams squad that hadn’t lost a regional game all season proved too daunting a task, and the Lady Freemen were eliminated from the tournament losing by a 65-52 score.

“We knew they were a skilled team that passed the ball well,” Lady Freemen coach Patti Parker commented following the loss. “Our goal was to force them into taking difficult shots.”

Providence came out with energy and attempted to follow coach Parker’s plans early on. However, the Rams opened up the game on a tear as they made tough shots over the Lady Freemen defense to take a double digit lead early on. Providence fought back behind the hard work ethic of freshman Kathy Kallis (.571 FG%, 8 pts, 6 rebs), and cut down the lead, but sharp-shooting guard Elisabeth Trickey (24 pts) and her Rams squad still entered the half up 34-21.

The Lady Freemen then kept the game competitive in the second half as Sonia Radi and her game-high 24 points prevented her squad from falling into a deeper gap. Providence was able to keep the scoring in the half even at 31, but the Rams used their first half lead to propel them to a 65-52 victory.

In the end the loss meant Providence was knocked out of the tournament and would not qualify for the National Tournament. However, to coach Parker and her side’s credit, the loss also marked an improvement from the 72-51 defeat the Lady Freemen faced when the two squads met earlier this season.

Awards were also handed out following the completion of the tournament where two Lady Freemen athletes were rewarded for their efforts this season. Freshman Sonia Radi was named to the First Team All-Region while senior Jill Reimer received an honorable mention.

Note: The Lady Freemen return to action this weekend when they head to CMU for the MCAC Championship tournament. They head into the tournament holding the #3 ranking, and face #2 Red River Rebels in their opening match-up Friday evening at 6pm.
