Providence soccer players named MCAC Athletes of the Week
The Providence soccer teams scored an impressive double on Thursday as Julika Kehler and Herby Magny were named Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week.
Kehler, who leads the Pilots women in scoring ahead of this weekend’s play-off matches, tallied for the 14th time in 11 outings as her side earned a vital 2-0 win over the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers on Sunday afternoon.
“We needed a win or tie against CMU, and she stepped up and played extremely hard and scored the second goal,” head coach Tory Walker told the official MCAC website. “Julika is a pivotal part of our team. She is our energy and aggression.”
Magny, meanwhile, found the back of the net in the 78th minute as the Pilots men drew CMU 1-1 at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex. Hailing from Turks and Caicos Islands, he, like Kehler, is his team’s top goalscorer heading into the MCAC semi-finals.
“Herby scored the goal against CMU, was a vocal leader, was strong on the ball and challenged for various other goals,” remarked head coach Joey Passi, in conversation with the official MCAC website. “He was a key outlet in playing out of the back to transition forward. He has been a consistent playmaker for us this year, leading our team in goals and assists.”
The 2016 MCAC play-offs will kick off Saturday at the Norm Konowalchuk Soccer Complex at Red River College with the Pilots women facing the host Rebels and the men taking on Les Rouges de l’Universite de Saint-Boniface.
Victory would put the women in a provincial final against either Les Rouges or the Brandon University Bobcats while the men would go up against either Red River or CMU.
