Guests were treated to an artistic welcoming of Spring at the annual Providence College Spring Concert at the Emmanuel Evangelical Free Church in Steinbach on Sunday, Mar. 28.
The event featured performances by Straight Ahead, Providence's own jazz band directed by Matt Neufeld; Dolce, a student instrumental ensemble; and the Providence Chamber Singers, directed by Dr. Henry Schellenberg. The Providence Chamber Singers had recently returned from a successful March break high school tour and the music from all performers really impacted the audience.
“This was truly a Chamber Choir in the best sense of the term--each member contributing their individual robust sound but then blending wonderfully as an ensemble--such stage presence!" said Dr. Bill Derksen, Professor Emeritus of Music Studies at Providence.
Other audience members were impressed with the artistry of the groups and the wide range of repertoire. A few guest commented that “you could tell they were singing from their hearts.”
The Providence community enjoyed the celebration of music and the warmer weather, and also kicked off a new Providence fundraising campaign to remember 2010 as the year constituents helped to raise $85,000 by graduation at the end of April. For more information on the fundraising challenge, please contact Margaret Schonewille, director of development.
