Providence Welcome Week embracing arrivals of first-year and returning students
Following an exciting, engaging weekend of Welcome Week activities, Providence is looking forward to carrying the momentum from orientation into Wednesday’s commencement of classes.
The arrival of first-year students kicked off Welcome Week 2017 on Friday. After completing their various registrations the largest Providence freshmen cohort in 10 years was offered campus tours, and parents were provided their own orientation session. A free supper was provided later that afternoon.
Saturday’s schedule began with morning chapel, and after lunch the new students were clustered into teams that competed for the inaugural Prov Cup. (Congratulations Team Blue!) Participants were able to unwind while watching movies in the evening.
Returning students began to arrive on Sunday afternoon. Many made their way to the soccer fields where more than 40 alumni had shown up to take on the varsity Pilots teams in a pair of alumni soccer matches. Following a free barbecue supper the entire Providence community sampled De Luca’s coffee and Bigway’s gelato—also provided free of charge.
Then, at 6:30 p.m., more than 450 students, employees, alumni and friends from nearby communities filed into the gym for a free concert featuring Scribe (who had scored a free-kick goal for the alumni men’s soccer team just a few hours earlier) and The Color. The concert set an upbeat tone and produced positive energy that carried into Monday and Tuesday’s academic orientation sessions.
As of 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday the 2017-18 school year will be officially underway, and with robust, growing enrollment and an assortment of new programs, including a Bachelor of Science and a revamped Music department, Providence is looking ahead with excitement.
