Lady Freemen Start Season with Shocker
Women’s soccer team takes two from defending region champs
Sept 12/10 - The Lady Freemen sent the message that they are no longer satisfied with taking a backseat in regional competition this weekend as they knocked off the two-time defending NCCAA regional champions, the North Central University Rams, in a thrilling set of back-to-back games. Both games were decided by a single goal in Providence’s favor as they took Friday’s afternoon game 1-0, and followed that with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory Saturday.
In Friday’s game both sides seemed to use the first half as an opportunity to feel out the other’s play, as few scoring opportunities arose for either side, and the half featured a back-and-forth battle played out mainly in the midfield. The sides then continued the scoreless match until late in the second half, at which point the healed leg of Ruth Maddever blasted a shot off NCU’s keeper and Lady Freemen forward Elena Rempel put away the rebound to score the game’s only goal. Maddi Stott recorded the clean sheet for Providence.
Saturday saw a much more offensively minded game as both sides came out flying in a re-match that had both sides vying for regional positioning early in the season. The Lady Freemen opened the scoring as Elena Rempel put away an early goal. However, NCU were ready for Providence’s attack on this day, and were able to counter with two goals of their own. But the Lady Freemen were able to counter with a comeback of their own in the second half, as Michelle Scully rifled a shot from the left corner of the 18-yard box that rippled the top right corner of the net to tie up the game. Ruth Maddever then capped off the scoring late in the half to seal a Lady Freemen 3-2 win.
With two games down, the Lady Freemen have shown their dedication to improve on last year’s season as the two wins already match their season’s total from last year.
The next Lady Freemen game will be played on Sunday, as they host newcomers to the league, the University of Winnipeg Wesmen.
