Lady Freemen Fall to Wesmen
U of W defeats Providence 8-0
Sept, 20/10 - The Lady Freemen hosted the CIS candidate University of Winnipeg Wesmen squad Sunday afternoon. While they were able to play inspired soccer throughout the game, the Lady Freemen ended up falling 8-0 to a very skilled Wesmen side.
Providence started the game with a new-look 3-2-3-2 formation in hopes of warding off the Wesmen attack, and were successful in doing so until late in the first half. However, dominant possession play from the Wesmen side eventually wore down a strong defensive performance, and the U of W finished the half with two goals in the final fifteen minutes.
The second half saw the Wesmen play an even more amazing passing game that proved to be more than the Lady Freemen were able to withstand, and the Wesmen were able to put away six more goals to finish the game with an 8-0 scoreline.
“I am really proud of the way all the girls played,” sophomore defender Gena Geisbrecht commented following the game. “It was a really good experience playing such a tough team, we did great to pull together and work hard as a team. After seeing (the University of Winnipeg’s) previous score we were happy to keep the score at that level, and I think going forward we will be able to give them better matches when we play again.”
The Lady Freemen next play on Saturday when they travel to Jamestown, ND to face Jamestown College.
