Many happy craft-lovers left with armloads of items from the gift and craft sale during the Christmas Extravaganza at Providence College and Seminary on Saturday, Nov. 13.

Over 365 people attended the gift and craft sale which includes the over 60 vendors. Avid craft-shopper Libby Hanna was impressed with the event and was able to pick up many of her Christmas gift purchases at the event.

“The school is here for the community and I was thrilled to see so many from the community on campus for the first time,” said Margaret Schonewille, vice president for Development at Providence, and Christmas Extravaganza coordinator.

“We were pleased to have such a variety of vendors. Many thought that it was good especially for it being our first year. Next year we will attempt to do more in the way of signage which will assist with drawing people.”

Many vendors commented on the space provided for the craft sale.

“The vendors appreciated the Green Room where refreshments were for available for them during the day,” said Schonewille. “They also appreciated the space, and lighting of the gym.”

The Festival of Trees provided a festive atmosphere, with many trees decorated by the students and staff at Providence, as well as community businesses like Swish Cleaning, Funk’s Toyota, Prudential Realty, and Goldenwest Broadcasting. Each tree was successfully auctioned off.

The community dinner and carol sing drew a bit of an older crowd and was a warm time of traditional Christmas music led by one of the Providence music students. Students stayed for the carol sing as well, and voices of young and old filled the Reimer Student Life Centre with beautiful harmonies.

“I think we sang just about every song in the carol book,” said Schonewille.

A special thanks to Jeremy Gerbrandt (student conductor), Candace Unrau (pianist), and Nicky Letkeman and Colin Hamm (singers).

The festivities continue on Dec. 3 and 4 with the annual Festival of Christmas Praise.
