Business Students Weigh in on Provincial Budget Priorities
2010-11-29

Providence College Business Students Provide Budget Advice to Provincial Ministers

On November 29th, students from the Business Administration program at Providence College took part in provincial pre-budget consultations at a public meeting in Lorette, Manitoba. In addition to participating in the general discussions on budget priorities, the students made a presentation proposing:

  • An end to all tuition freezes at Manitoba universities and colleges
  • Predictable funding for municipal infrastructure
  • A method for ending the impasse on the payroll tax
  • Improvements to the Rural Entrepreneurs Assistance Program and the Sustainable Development Procurement Program

The presentation was well-received by both the Minister of Finance (Hon. Rosann Wowchuk) and the Minister of Local Government (Hon. Ron Lemeiux), as well as municipal representatives and members of the public who attended.

"This started out as an exercise for our course called Business/Government Relations," said Bruce Duggan, associate professor of Management. "But it evolved into a very interesting opportunity for students to have input into provincial government policy."
