Riley and Sarah Enns

Answering the call to Haiti

On Wednesday, March 23, alumni Sara and Riley Enns shared about their future.

Ever since she was sixteen years old, Sarah Pascoe Enns has felt called to Haiti. After her first trip, it has been a dream of Sarah’s to live and work in Haiti for an extended period of time. Sarah and her husband Riley will be fulfilling that dream when they move to Haiti in the spring of 2011 to become house parents at an orphanage in Deschappelles, Haiti.

Sarah and Riley met as students at Providence College. Sarah graduated with a BA with a Social Sciences major and Riley finished a Youth Leadership major with a Biblical Studies minor. After they were married in 2008, they worked at Siloam Mission in downtown Winnipeg, serving in a number of capacities before answering God’s call to Haiti. They will be serving with the Manitoba-based non-profit organisation Open Doorways Orphanage. Open Doorways was founded by Sharon Dugard of Beausejour, Manitoba after she visited Haiti and fell in love with the country and its people. As she interacted with children in orphanages, she realized how desperately they need not only shelter, food, and education, but also love. Open Doorways Orphanage is dedicated to providing a safe and loving home for Haitian children who have been orphaned or abandoned; a home where children have their basic needs met, are given the opportunity to grow spiritually, and receive an education while exploring their unique gifts and abilities. Sarah and Riley both speak passionately about the ongoing vision of Open Doorways – the desire to see every child within the community grow up to be resilient, responsible, compassionate people who contribute positively to their society.

Open Doorways has constructed a brand new 32 bed orphanage, with the construction work being completed by Haitians. The orphanage will offer love, care, and support for children who would otherwise be left on their own and we desire to create a home where everyone has a sense of belonging. Sarah and Riley will be the house parents while all other positions, including maintenance, kitchen, and care staff, will be filled by Haitians. In addition to providing a home, education and a family structure for the children, Open Doorways is committed to providing meaningful and dignified employment to local people.

The belief that God has been preparing them for this opportunity is evident when Sarah and Riley shared about their upcoming move. When asked about God’s leading, they said “Often we don’t know or understand what God is preparing us for. We have experiences that may not mean much in the moment, but when we look, we can see God’s hand working and preparing us. So in our education from Providence, our non-profit experience at Siloam Mission, and the variety of other experiences that just seem to fit with this, we thank God for preparing us - even when we didn’t know it.”

An adventure is beginning for Sarah and Riley Enns, and for Open Doorways Orphanage. If you would like to know more about this vital work, contribute to the project, or help support Sarah and Riley, please visit Open Doorways Orphanage, or stay in touch on Facebook.
