A Successful Start for Men's Soccer
A defensive battle ensued between the Freemen and the Blazers, where neither team was willing to give up goals throughout the game. In an equally matched game throughout, both of the teams’ shots on goal were even. Fortunately, in the 90th minute of the game, Mario Giesbrecht (Junior; Niverville, MB) was fouled inside the penalty area and was awarded a penalty shot. Giesbrecht was able to send the goalie (CMU’s Blayne Stobbe) the wrong way as he successfully scored the only goal of the game. The Providence Freemen opened their season on a win, defeating CMU 1-0.
Head Coach, Martin Ward, was pleased with the well-organized and disciplined style of soccer that was exhibited by both teams.
In their second game of the season, on Sunday, September 11, 2011, the Freemen competed against the Red River Rebels who are new to the scene in the Manitoba Colleges Athletics Conference this year.
The game commenced with strong play by the Providence defense, helping Eder Torres (Freshman; Brandon, MB) to a second consecutive shut-out. In a convincing 4-0 win by the Freemen, Mario Giesbrecht helped seal the deal scoring a hat-trick, while Martial Galay (Junior; Norquay, SK) found the corner of the net adding a late and final fourth goal to keep the lead comfortable. Giesbrecht’s goals were assisted by Norvin Campos and Joel Janke.
Weekend noteworthy statistics: Mario Giesbrecht - 4 goals, 1 assist; Martial Galay - 1 goal; Norvin Campos - 2 assists; Joel Janke - 1 assist; Mark Wiebe -1 assist.
The team is off to Dunbar Wisconsin this week to play Northland International University on Friday, September 17 & Saturday, September 18th. Next home game action will take place Thursday, September 22nd at 5:30pm against the College Wesmen.
