Soccer News Update
It was a jam-packed weekend for Providence University College athletics as the school hosted the NCCAA Regional
On the women’s side, the Lady Freemen played the Faith Eagles and showed composure and control for most of the game. The Eagles plan was to fall back, defend, and dare Providence to shoot long balls against their talented goalie (Laura Fowler, the Regional MVP). Their plan worked as they took Providence to two overtimes and won 2-1 in penalty kicks to advance to the final against the North Central University Rams.
Coach Calla reasons that Faith did what they had to do to take Providence to penalties. He adds, “they accomplished it [their goal] and it worked.”
For the team, Elena Rempel and Ally Dueck (both from Niverville, MB) both missed close fast break chances and the team had several opportunities to score. Calla comments, “You just cannot miss 6 out of 7 penalties and expect to win-- Faith deserved to win. They executed their game plan, believed in it, and it worked.”
NCCAA All-Region team selections included Elena Rempel, Ally Dueck, Jen Derksen and Mel Warkentine (who was the second leading vote getter for MVP).
The Providence men, who earned a bye to the Championship final, took on the North Central University Rams in a battle for the banner. The two teams were evenly matched with both goalkeepers making excellent saves from free kick shots. Providence had more possession, more attacks, and came very close to scoring several times but unfortunately NCU scored from the one opportunity they had close to goal (winning the final 1-0).
Coach Ward comments, “It was a close and exciting championship game. In tight games like this, you have to take your opportunities to win and unfortunately for us they [NCU] did and we didn't. We will learn from this experience and come back stronger next year.”
Norvin Campos, Dale Danso, Joel Janke were selected to the NCCAA All-Region (Div. II) team, and Mario Giesbrecht was awarded Most Valuable Player for the Region.
