The women’s basketball team had a tough go this weekend in both away games against the Red River College Rebels. On Friday, February 3rd, Providence fell at the hands of the agile and strong defending Rebels (81-32). Despite the loss, bright spots for the Lady Freemen included Brynn Swan (Edmonton, AB) with 10 points and 12 rebounds, and both Christine Parker (Winnipeg, MB) and Elena Rempel (Niverville, MB), who pitched in 6 points and 6 rebounds a piece. In Saturday’s game, Providence worked hard to eliminate the Rebels’ fast-break offense, and forced the team to hit more of their outside shots. Head Coach Patti Parker comments, “Although we still struggled in the offensive end, we pulled out a first quarter win [15 to 13]. This was encouraging as we know how we can play at our best and can aim for piecing together four quarters of that same kind of play.” At the buzzer, Providence lost 74-34 to the Rebels. Notable stat getters included Swan with 10 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists; Rempel with 7 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists; and Parker with 5 points, 10 rebounds.
Men In Friday night’s match-up against Red River, the Rebels opened up in the first quarter with a man-to-man defense and Providence was able to use their speed and athleticism to create easy scoring opportunities. Making an early adjustment, Red River switched to a 2-3 zone that put additional pressure on Providence to hit longer jumpshots. Unfortunately, Providence was unable to hit when they needed to resulting in one of their lowest scoring outputs of the season (38-68). For the game, Chris Funk (Steinbach, MB) recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds and Johnathan Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas) brought in 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Providence will challenge the CMU Blazers at Canadian Mennonite University on Wednesday, February 8th (6pm & 8:00pm) and again at Providence on Friday, February 10th (6pm & 8:00pm). For more details, visit www.providencecollege.ca/athletics. ![]() |
