Women
Despite winning both games, Providence has seen better matches. Head Coach Scott Masterson, admits “I thought we played with little intensity and emotion and so I was happy to come out with two wins under these circumstances. We will need to play with more intensity if we hope to beat Red River in two weeks [at the MCAC Championships]”. Providence will once again face Red River in the MCAC Semi-finals hosted at Providence University College on February 24-25th, 2012. Top stat getters for Friday’s game: Atira Clunis (Winnipeg, MB) with 10 kills; Lauren Toews (Winnipeg, MB) with 9 kills; Victoria Ryshytylo (Selkirk, MB) with 8 kills; and Christa Penner (Rosenort, MB) with 40 assists. Top stat getters for Saturday’s game: Ryshytylo with 15 kills; Jessica Hamm (Landmark, MB) with 9 kills, 6 digs; Chelsea Needham (Winnipeg, MB) with 8 kills, 9 digs; and Penner with 34 assists.
Men
On the men’s side, the volleyball team traveled to Grand Forks, ND to play in a NDSU tournament. Seeing much success, the team charged ahead winning matches against the University of St. Thomas (25-12, 25-9); St. John's University (25-11, 25-25); the University of Minnesota (25-8, 25-9) and NDSU (25-11, 25-19). Commenting on the tournament, Head Coach Jason Peters thought the team played a good tournament. He adds, “We talked all week about making sure that we did things right on our side of the net regardless of the level of our competition and the guys responded with a solid effort. We had great contributions from all players which was great to see.” Providence is currently ranked number #5 in the nation and the team is excited to play in an upcoming tournament at the University of Central Florida in early March. Top stat getters for the weekend: Delmer Krahn (New Bothwell, MB) with 38 kills, 5 aces, 4 blocks, and 9 digs; Kevin Hildebrand (Bergthal, Paraguay) with 24 kills, and Paul Warkentin (Steinbach, MB) with 72 assists. Next action for the men’s volleyball team will take place in Orlando, Florida on March 3rd and 4th, 2012. ![]() |
