Basketball News Update
Over the weekend, the Providence men and women’s basketball teams competed in their NCCAA Regional tournament. The women went in ranked #3 and had to face the #2 Trinity Lions who were the hosts of the tournament. With solid pressure and exciting home fan support, the Trinity Lions launched ahead early and defeated Prov 68-36 in the Semi-final round.
The Providence men went in ranked #4 looking to get an upset against the #1 North Central University Rams. Down 40-47 at the end of the first half, the team put up a battle to stay close with NCU. In the second half, the Rams played strong offensively and broadened the scoring gap. Late in the game, Providence applied pressure and made a run to bring the game to under 20 points. Unfortunately it was too little too late and the Rams defeated Providence 102-80 in the high scoring Semi-final.
Recognition was awarded to Providence sophomore, Kristi Larson (Gardner, ND), who was selected from the women’s squad to the NCCAA All-Region 2nd Team. Larson was a strong contributor in her team’s league games throughout the year and statistically was ranked nationally in assists and steals.
For the men, Johnathan Thompson (Nassau Bahamas), the quick and agile game changer was also selected to the NCCAA All-Region 2nd Team. Additionally, last but not least, graduating senior Chris Funk (Steinbach, MB) deservedly was nominated to the NCCAA All-Regional 1st Team for his overall contribution this year.
The teams look to finish off their seasons on a high note at the MCAC Championships in Winnipeg, MB this coming weekend (hosted at Red River College). Follow www.mcacathletics.ca for updates and schedules.
