2012-03-05
The Providence Men’s and Women’s basketball teams played in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference tournament this past weekend. On Friday, the fourth seeded Providence men’s team lost to #1 seed CMU 82-56. On the same night the fourth seeded Providence women’s team upset #1 seed University of Winnipeg Wesmen. The Cinderella finish was only the fourth conference win of the season for Providence, who defeated the 13-1 Wesmen by a score of 56-51. On Saturday, the Freemen’s men’s team was outmanned in the high-scoring bronze metal game by the U of W Wesmen, 102-73. The Freemen could not get enough stops to keep it close at the end. The Providence Women’s team put in a good showing against the Red River College Rebels and kept the game close into the second half. But in the end the full-court press and quick offense of Red River was more than Providence could handle. The Rebels came away with the championship by a score of 68-51. Congratulations to both teams on a good season. It was the final season for both head coaches, Patti Parker for the women and Juan Larios for the men. Read more here.
