Volleyball News Update
On Saturday, March 3rd, 2012, the men’s volleyball team had the opportunity to compete in an Orlando Spring Shootout Tournament at the University of Central Florida.
Facing high quality competition, Head Coach Jason Peters reports his team played pretty well all day considering they were against some of the best teams they had seen in the United States this season.
Peters comments, “We were competitive for the most part in every match, but we just were not able to win a few key points in both of our losses that could have resulted in wins for us. Our serve receive was tremendous all day long, but we struggled to serve tough and to block effectively which made life more difficult than it should have been."
The Providence Freemen won in two sets versus the 96 Bulls, a USAV Club team (25-21, 25-18), and the University of Miami, an NCVF Division 1 team (25-20, 25-16). However, the team lost 0-2 to the Marshall (27-29, 18-25) and 1-2 to Breezy (20-25, 25-21,13-15), also USAV Club teams. Overall, the team concluded the weekend with a 5th place finish.
As has been the case all season, the Providence Freemen were led by Delmer Krahn (New Bothwell, MB) and Kevin Hildebrand (Bergthal, Paraguay) offensively, while Ryan Hamm (Chatham, ON) and Josh Doerksen (New Bothwell, MB) made solid contributions defensively and in serve receive.
Peters adds, “We are building with our practices this week for what should be an exciting weekend at our Conference Championships in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. We have been really close to bringing back a conference title in the past two years, and it has been one of our main goals to get over the hump this year.” The team is excited for the opportunity in the upcoming weekend to accomplish this very goal.
Top stat getters for the weekend: Delmer Krahn with 34 kills, 3 aces; Kevin Hildebrand with 20 kills, 5 aces; Steve Schapansky (Niverville, MB) with 13 kills, 4 aces; Ryan Hamm with 11 digs, serve receive of 2.68; and Josh Doerksen with 10 digs.
