Expressions of Justice Film Festival
A student led initiative from the Sociology Department
March 13, 2012- Providence University College is pleased to announce the first annual Expressions of Justice Festival to be held March 23-24 in the Reimer Student Life Centre. Expressions of Justice is a student led initiative from the Sociology Department intended to increase awareness of various social justice issues and explore Christian responses to them. The general public as well as the Providence community are welcome to this two-day event. The festival intends to focus on both local and global justice issues, with an emphasis on promoting community and cohesion, mobilizing those in attendance to respond to the challenges.
Throughout the weekend, Expressions of Justice will feature various events that highlight concerns such as environmental sustainability, human trafficking, women's rights, aboriginal issues, and food justice. The festival intends to both raise awareness of the complexities of these social problems and to equip participants with practical ways to help. Student coordinators Meghan Edwards and Heidi Martens hope that this will become an annual event, a place where people of faith can discuss a variety of issues that call for justice. Val Hiebert, sociology department faculty supervisor of this event notes that social justice should be of significant interest to Christians given “the overwhelming emphases of the Biblical text in calling us to care for our neighbor by acknowledging and addressing all forms of oppression”.
Both days are free of cost, and everyone is welcome to attend any and all events!
