Medicine Hat in Town

Women’s Soccer – Medicine Hat

In a Labor Day showdown, Providence hosted the men’s and women’s soccer teams from Medicine Hat College. The women were up first and played in front of a capacity crowd. The home team got off to a slow start and was outplayed for almost the whole first half. Fortunate to be down 1-0 at half, Providence came back with heart in the second half and managed to finish the game with a 1-1 draw. Coach Dante Calla comments, “I thought it was a game of two halves. We were very timid and hesitant in the first half and we paid for it. They dominated the play and possession. But at half time I told the team we were lucky to be down 1 and had a golden opportunity to get back in the game! I switched up the formation and told them that if we would be committed to winning 50/50 balls, we would get back in it and we did! I was extremely proud of the character we showed because we were down and out but kept fighting. Those are things you can’t teach, they have to be innate and I’m excited we were able to show it!” Goal scorer – Brianna Plett

Men’s Soccer – Medicine Hat

The excitement continued as the men took the field. In a fast, entertaining contest, the home team pleased the crowd with a 3-1 win over Medicine Hat. In a game filled with opportunities, Providence showed off their all around talent and potential for the season to come. Coach Martin Ward was very encouraged with the performance his boys gave him. “I was very pleased with the way the team came together this weekend. Everyone on the squad contributed and we learned a lot about the capabilities of the players and what we have to work on. It was a tough game against Medicine Hat but we played some creative and entertaining soccer. Now we need to work hard to develop the potential that we have on this team.”
Next up for the Providence soccer teams, they will travel to Fargo on Friday to play North Central University, a division rival.
