This past weekend, the women’s volleyball team from Providence University College travelled down to Ankeny, Iowa for a preseason tournament hosted by Faith Baptist Bible College. In pool play, Providence got off to a slow start against Manhattan Christian College and lost the match 25-14, 25-22, 25-23. After a tough first match, Providence came together for two good wins against the home team winning in four sets and then sweeping past Northland International University 25- 20, 27-25, 25-19.
Finishing pool play with a 2-1 record, Providence then faced Grace University in the third place match. It was a fairly even matchup that ended up going the distance. Grace took the first two sets but saw Providence fight back and win the third and fourth sets. Grace started the fifth and deciding set off with energy that had escaped them over the previous two sets. They jumped out to a big lead early and despite a late comeback, took the set and the match.
Assistant coach Kyle Guenther comments that the weekend was an overall success for the team. “Starting quite a bit earlier in the year, we weren’t too sure what to expect after only being together for a few days prior to the tournament. The girls showed some fight in the final match and it was great to see them come together and play like that so early in the season. Playing this weekend gave a good indication of the skill our team possesses and also what some of the key things are that we need to work on.”
The ladies from Providence travel this weekend (September 6-8) to Minneapolis for a regional tournament hosted by North Central University.
