Providence Sends CMU Home Empty Handed

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Providence University College, Providence hosted their MCAC rivals CMU. The girls got things started on the field with an intense contest. Providence had the edge in position and chances but neither team could find the back of the net. With 2 minutes remaining and the capacity crowd roaring for a goal, Brianna Plett got a breakaway and flipped a beauty shot over the goalies head. This gave Providence the 1-0 lead which ended up being the final. Coach Giancarlo Calla was quick to praise the defense after the game. “I was proud of the defense. I thought they did a phenomenal job defending the most threatening player in the MCAC. I was a little disappointed in our finishing, but all in all it is a win. We just need to get healthy and we’ll be fine.”
In a highly anticipated matchup, the guys took the field next under perfect conditions. Providence came out with a blazing start and never looked back. With a pair of goals from Norvin Campos, a beauty by Brendan Wiens, and Mario Giesbrecht finding the twine on a penalty kick, the home team came away with a 4-1 victory. “We knew that CMU had recruited some quality players and that this would be a tough game, and it was certainly not as comfortable as the score line suggests. However to win 4-1 against a previously unbeaten team is a very good result. We created some goal scoring chances and finished them clinically, which is a big improvement over previous games this year and something we worked on during practice. I thought Norvin and Brendan were outstanding and everyone else worked hard to keep CMU at bay so it was a good team effort.”
