Providence Sends 3 Teams to Nationals
It is a special year for the Athletics department at Providence University College. All three fall sports teams are heading to the National tournament in their NCCAA league. The National Christian College Athletic Association is the U.S. league that all Providence Varsity teams participate in as well as the Manitoba league.
The Women’s soccer team beat Faith Baptist Bible College in the Regional semi-final and then lost to North Central University in penalty kicks in the final dashing their hopes at their ultimate goal. Providence had never left the top 10 in the nation during the season and applied for a wildcard bid for Nationals. Usually taking 8 teams to Nationals, including 5 Region winners and 3 wildcard spots, the NCCAA reduced it to 6 teams with 1 wildcard spot. Providence was in tough to get selected as the defending National champions were vying for a wildcard spot as well as a couple other strong teams. The team from Otterburne, Manitoba saw their dreams come true, however, getting the nod as the only wildcard team. This is only the second time in school history that the Women’s Soccer team has made it to the National Championships. Melanie Warkentin, a senior from Providence, received the region MVP award for the season. Elena Rempel, Danielle Sanjenko, and Brianna Plett were also selected to the All-Region Team. The Women’ Head Coach Giancarlo Calla had his hard work rewarded as well, receiving Coach of the Year for the North Central Conference.
The Men’s soccer team received a bye straight to the Regional championship after finishing first in the conference. North Central University was the only thing standing in their way of a berth at Nationals. With some great passing and execution, Providence beat NCU quite handily 5-0. The men are heading back to Nationals for the 6th time in 7 years. Norvin Campos, Mario Giesbrecht, Jonathan Janke, and Troy Lydiate received All-Region team awards. Providence Head Coach Martin Ward received Coach of the Year for leading his team to a very impressive season.
The Women’s Volleyball team took care of business in their Regional tournament. Beating Trinity Bible College in the semi-final and Faith Baptist Bible College in the Championship, Providence has advanced to the National Championship for the fifth year in row. Coach Scott Masterson received the Coach of the Year award, giving Providence the sweep in that category for all fall sports teams. Lauren Toews, Heidi Martens, Christa Penner, and Katelyn Corbin were awarded for their great play all season by being voted to the All-Region team.
Providence University College is the only school from Canada that participates in the NCCAA. Providence is also the only to school to send teams from all three sports to Nationals this year. This is quite an amazing accomplishment to have played their way to Nationals but also to represent our country.
