Posts from the President Vol 11
As a new President this year, I have had the opportunity to meet many new friends. They are old friends of Providence, but they are new friends to me. A few days ago I met seven friends, some old, some new. I am blessed! Some of these folks are retired (one couple celebrates 70 years of marriage next month), some are pastors, some are still working. They are all delightful people who share the same values, serve the same God, and care about Providence University College and Theological Seminary. They are interested in what is happening on campus, they are interested in me, and I am interested in them—they live such interesting lives.
Jesus said, “I have come to give you abundant life” (John 10:10). The context of this statement is the Good Shepherd discourse. There Jesus talks about the church as his sheep for whom he cares and provides. Later, in the upper room (John 13-16) Jesus talks about disciples loving one another. Still later in John he prays for the unity of the church (John 17). And, in John, at the end of his time on earth he breathes the Holy Spirit on his disciples, who in some sense represent the church. I wonder if the abundant life that Jesus promised is somehow related to our experience of the church. My life does not consist of the things I possess be that physical wealth, health, or education. The abundance of my life consists of my friends. I am thankful for the many new friends I have met in my new role as President, and I am thankful for my old friends too. I am truly blessed with an abundant life!
