ProvPlayers theatre tour enriches classroom experiences across Manitoba
2013-03-18

ProvPlayers, Providence’s elite touring theatre troupe performed for high school students across Manitoba during the week of March 4-8. The five member troupe performed five different short plays at four different high schools to over 350 students. The team began rehearsing their repertoire in September in preparation for the tour.

“Visiting classrooms and performing for students is always the highlight of our year”, said Emily Summach, ProvPlayers director, “It’s a very meaningful experience to bring the power of theatre directly to the students and teachers. Seeing students engaging with the actors and themes of the plays during our talk-back discussions is so exciting. For many students, this might be the only theatrical performance they may see all year.”

Brett Schmall, Senior English Language Arts and Drama Teacher at Green Valley School found that ProvPlayers help to illustrate concepts that he teaches to his students, “Having the Providence Players visit and present to my classes helped to convey to my students the notion that can theatre can be done anywhere. In addition, the team's adaptability, on stage focus and energy modeled well aspects of performance that I stress with my students in my Drama classes.”

It wasn’t only the students in the audience who were impacted by the experience. First year student and member of ProvPlayers, Megan Hazelton, was surprised at how the classroom performances challenged her, “High school students are an incredibly complex, richly engaged audience. Even if it seems they are not "into" what you're performing it's evident that they are searching what we're presenting for something that they can relate to. I think that's what I loved about tour, being surprised at what the students took away from the performance.”

The Providence University College Theatre program continues to work towards it’s goal of enriching student’s educational experiences, not only for the students in the program, but for students around the province.
