Providence Celebrates 90 Years

90 years ago this week, eight students of Providence (then Winnipeg Bible Training School), took their seats to begin class for the very first time in what has truly become a Legacy of Faithfulness.

Fast-forward 90 years later to 2015, and over 470 University College, Mile Two and Theological Seminary students began their winter semesters this week at Providence – and that’s certainly something to celebrate.

On Tuesday morning, students, staff, faculty, alumni, and members of the board gathered together for the 90th Anniversary Chapel to celebrate the milestone, and spend time reflecting on what Providence has meant to its community.

Representing alumni was Terry Janke, who reflected on how Providence not only has changed his life, but has also been a memorable place of growth and spiritual formation for his three children who all have spent time at Providence as students as well.

Sociology professor and long-time member of the Providence faculty Dr. Dennis Hiebert then spoke, affirming Providence as a place where he’s been able to grow professionally in a way that’s allowed him to broaden his knowledge-base far beyond one specific discipline.

Next up to speak was senior student Lauren Toews, who sees Providence as the place where she really learned to let God guide her path, which included heartfelt stories of ways she’s seen God work in her life and others since coming to Providence.

Finally, we heard from board member Esther Dyck, who echoed many of the sentiments of the rest of the community, and stating Providence’s continued dedication to teaching people to grow in knowledge and character for leadership and service.

After the reflection, and some great worship led by Once Lost, it was time for cake. When it’s announced that cake is going to be served, there are always varying degrees of excitement. However, what was waiting for us downstairs far surpassed any expectations. Not only were there four different cakes to indulge in, the art and creativity put into it was astounding. Best of all: it tasted just as good as it looked.

Though the celebration has come to an end for this week, 2015 will continue to be a year of reflection, as well as a year of moving forward in the right direction. You only turn 90 once, but here’s to 90 more.
