Providence alumnus Andry Giesbrecht has been named Manitoba Soccer Association Outstanding Male Player for 2014.
Giesbrecht, who completed his Business Administration degree at Providence in 2012, starred for Hanover Kickers as the Steinbach-based outfit earned promotion to the Admiral Premier League from the Manitoba Major Soccer League’s Division One.
A standout forward during his time at Providence (his left foot was, and remains, particularly fearsome), Giesbrecht also scored 14 goals in 11 matches during the just-completed indoor season.
His recent success comes as no surprise to Martin Ward—his Providence coach from 2008 through 2011.
“Andry is the most efficient goalscorer I have seen at any level,” he says. “He would quite often demoralize opponents with the quality of his goals.”
Ward, who was recently recognized for 21 years of coaching service at Providence, recalls a particular match in which Giesbrecht scored an impressive hat-trick inside the opening half hour: “one with a low shot; one with a header and one with a soft-touch volley.”
Giesbrecht was a National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) All-American in both 2008 and 2010 and is Providence soccer’s top, all-time goalscorer with 83 tallies.
“Everything Andry brought to the game was earned by hard work,” says Ward. He trained hard and spent more time than anyone else I have coached simply practicing shooting and scoring goals.”
Giesbrecht relayed the news of his award on March 28 via Facebook, and the MSA has since posted the full list of 2014 winners to its website.
