Providence Scores Record-Breaking Win
Men’s Soccer nets a program record 18 in their season opener
The Providence Men’s Soccer squad came out determined to play a hard ninety minutes Saturday, and did not disappoint in a team effort that saw all eligible Freemen players find time on the pitch.
Freemen forward Andry Giesbrecht started the scoring in the 4’ off a threw ball from Mario Giesbrecht. Mario netted his own goal off a hard shot from just outside the penalty area in the 7’, and Andry added two more in the 9’ and 11’. The Freemen then continued to dominate possession and opportunities as they left the first half with an 11-0 lead.
The second half began with the Freemen adding two more goals in the first eight minutes. However, in a game that saw the more skilled team in Providence control the play, SBC was determined to fight until the final whistle. SBC’s tenacity paid off as they put away a goal in the 11’ and then caught the defense sleeping as they put another goal away in the 13’. SBC’s effort was even noticed by Providence fans as they cheered their counterparts’ goals after seeing the hard work and sportsmanship SBC had been giving throughout the game. But the two quick goals seemed to reawaken the talented Freemen squad as they regained their composure and struck back with five more goals in the final thirty minutes of the game to finish the scoring at 18-2.
"Our objective in every game is to play good, exciting soccer and I think we did that today.” Coach Ward commented after the game. “SBC played with great heart against a stronger team, and they have a first class attitude. Some people may think we ran up the score, but we showed our opponents respect by trying our best for the full ninety minutes".
