U of M President at Providence Convocation
Another hopeful and exciting academic year has begun and to commemorate and celebrate the beginning of another year, Providence College and Seminary hosted its second annual Fall Convocation. The esteemed guest speaker was Dr. David Barnard, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manitoba.
The Convocation began with a restating of the missions of the college and the seminary. Students were encouraged and reminded that education at Providence is fundamentally about spurring people on to action.
Dr. Barnard spoke of the importance of good leadership. In a time when the world is changing faster than ever before, there are many unknowns and people are searching for certainty. People are hungry for good leadership, and students are in training to respond to that hunger. Dr. Barnard referred to one of his favourite Old Testament scholars when he said that good leaders assume abundance instead of scarcity. “When leaders sing the lyric of abundance, they inspire culture and that is transformative power.”
The relationship between Providence and the University of Manitoba was strengthened this summer with increased positive talk about the recognition of Providence degrees. On June 24, 2009, the University of Manitoba’s Senate passed a motion that will make graduate studies much more accessible to Providence graduates.
