Providence Soccer Program Earns #1 Ranking
2009-09-30

The Providence Men’s Soccer program was rewarded for their 3-0 start to the season with a #1 ranking in the weekly coaches’ poll held Tuesday.

The Freemen were able to turn heads last weekend as they pulled off an upset victory against the defending NCCAA champions and formerly #1 ranked team Manhattan Christian College with a 1-0 result. The squad then further impressed by defeating a strong Faith Eagles squad 4-1 the next day despite the weariness of a long road trip and a late-night arrival in Ankeny. The squad also started the season with an impressive 18-2 win over Steinbach Bible College in MCAC play the weekend prior.

Coach Ward is very impressed with his team’s ability to perform this past week, and is humbled to have been recognized in this way by other coaches around the league.

“I think this ranking says we are up there amongst the top teams, but I don’t think that it means we are the best team.” Coach Ward explained. “I think it’s more of a recognition that we had a good weekend, we beat Manhattan and we beat Faith. It’s nice to have that peer recognition that we are one of the stronger teams in the league, and to receive some of the confidence that goes along with that.”
