Master of Divinity - Pentecostal Studies

Accredited Training for leading Pentecostal Churches

In 2007 the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) approved a new agreement between Horizon Seminary and Providence Theological Seminary. This agreement created a Pentecostal Studies track within Providence’s Master of Divinity program.

The Master of Divinity Pentecostal Studies Track offered by Horizon Seminary and Providence Theological Seminary provides an opportunity for men and women who worship and minister in Pentecostal settings. They are able to obtain graduate-level education and training with Pentecostal perspectives but without undue travel from their places of employment and ministry.

Program Requirements

The Pentecostal Studies Track of the Master of Divinity program includes 32 courses for 93 credit hours. Providence Theological Seminary offers the foundational M.Div. curriculum (22 courses for 66 hours) and Horizon Pentecostal Seminary offers the Pentecostal distinctive courses and supervised ministry experience (10 courses for 27 hours).

Following are the distinctive courses that make up the Pentecostal Studies Track:

• Pentecostal Spirituality (3 hrs)
• Introduction to Pentecostal Theology (3 hrs)
• Supervised Ministry Experience I (2 hrs)
• Supervised Ministry Experience 2 (2 hrs)
• Origins and Development of Global Pentecostalism (3 hrs)
• Homiletics: Pentecostal Perspectives (3 hrs)
• Pentecostals and Evangelism (3 hrs)
• Pentecostal Theology of Luke and Paul (3 hrs)
• Pastoral Theology: Pentecostal Perspectives (3 hrs)
• Pentecostal Elective (3 hrs)

Students who graduate from the Pentecostal Studies Track will receive the Master of Divinity degree from Providence and a Diploma in Theology from Horizon. This diploma will qualify the graduate to apply to The Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada for ministerial credentials leading towards ordination.

Schedule for Pentecostal Distinctive Courses

Most of the Pentecostal Studies distinctive courses are offered in a one-week module format either at Providence, at Horizon, or other approved locations. Following are courses offered in winter 2008:

TS5106 Introduction to Pentecostal Theology (3 hours)

Description - The goal of this course is to provide a forum for Pentecostals and non-Pentecostals to examine the essential features of Pentecostal Theology, its orthodox roots, and alterations created by offspring groups. Evangelicals provided the roots of what developed in the 20th century as a distinctive Pentecostal Theology. The unique doctrines which distinguish Pentecostalism from other evangelicals relate to the person and work of the Holy Spirit, particularly the baptism in the Spirit, speaking in other tongues, and the gifts of the Spirit. The course also includes an examination of offshoots of Pentecostal theology such as the “prosperity gospel” and “apostolic renewal.”

Admissions

Admission requirements for the M.Div. in Pentecostal Studies are the same as for other M.Div. programs at Providence Theological Seminary. See our current seminary catalogue for details.

Registration for the full M.Div. program is not required in order to take individual Pentecostal distinctive courses offered by Horizon Seminary. Special Student status is available through Providence to enable you to take several courses without a full application process.
